Microsoft, the service provider for the OUMail platform, announced that from October 1, 2022, basic authentication will be discontinued and only secure advanced authentication will be supported. Therefore, users currently utilizing basic authentication are requested to change their settings to advanced authentication or migrate to an email environment that supports advanced authentication.
Emails regarding this matter were sent from the OUMail administrator to OUMail addresses that might be using basic authentication between August and September 2022. However, depending on the user's email environment, it is possible that these notification emails were not received. Please be aware that you might still be using basic authentication even if you did not receive the notification email.
In simple terms, it is an older user authentication method applied during email sending and receiving, used by some email applications (like Gmail). The protocols related to receiving emails (such as POP and IMAP) are being discontinued, while the protocol for sending emails (SMTP) is not affected. For more details, please refer to the official announcement from Microsoft.
Whether Action is Required Based on Your Email Environment
In simple terms, it is an older user authentication method applied during email sending and receiving, used by some email applications (like Gmail). 1. Web Browser Version of Outlook:
No action is required.
2. Outlook Desktop App:
(Including Microsoft 365 apps provided under the Microsoft comprehensive contract and Outlook 2016 and later)
Generally, no action is required, but if the account was set up a long time ago, action may be needed. If "Microsoft Exchange" is displayed in the account information when you click "File" in the top left and then "Info" in the left menu, no action is needed. However, if "POP" or "IMAP" is displayed, it needs to be changed to "Microsoft Exchange."
3. Standard Mail Software on Mac Devices (MacBook, iPad, iPhone):
Generally, no action is required, but action may be needed if the OS version is outdated.
4. Gmail:
The web browser version of Gmail on a computer and the Gmail app on iOS (iPad, iPhone) only support basic authentication as of August 2, 2022. Please consider switching to another email environment. The Gmail app on Android supports advanced authentication.
For more details and information on other email applications, you can search the internet using combinations of terms like "Exchange," "advanced authentication (or OAuth 2)," and the name of the email application. Please refer to such information as needed and make the necessary changes.
Note:
Forwarding settings (forwarding emails received at OUMail to other email addresses) are not affected by this change and will continue to be available.
